Introduction:
The 1999 Lunar New Year Cup featured three invited national teams: Mexico, Egypt and Bulgaria.
After both Bulgaria and the Hong Kong League XI suffered defeats in their opening matches, the two sides met in the third-place playoff.
Wearing the No. 11 jersey, Bulgarian midfielder Ilian Iliev delivered an impressive performance, playing an active role in midfield and providing an assist. During the first half, he received a clever backheel pass from teammate Stoycho Stoilov before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot from the left side. However, Hong Kong League XI goalkeeper Dejan Devic produced a spectacular diving save to turn the ball behind for a corner.
After the match, Iliev exchanged jerseys with Hong Kong League XI captain Cheng Siu Chung, who wore the No. 10 shirt, in a gesture of mutual respect between the two players.
Iliev earned 34 international caps for Bulgaria during his playing career. Following his retirement in 2004, he moved into coaching and later served as head coach of the Bulgarian national team from 1 November 2023 until September 2025.
